Map in web.config

Create a custom handler:

to access a property of the config e.g. ID or Url add an accessor

Here is a good site for examples on how to write a customer Configuration handler when adding custom configuration sections to the web.config.

I have been building this site for a while now. I been reading up on SEO and MVC….however, have yet to convert it to MVC….that is on the to do list. However, here is the sites new home: Latchi Premium Villas. Once I’ve tested my new SEO knowledge I will write a post about it. However, this is in fact part of my SEO strategy.

I have been too busy with several projects to even think about the blog. I am currently working on the new Route One site which will being going live later this week. Will write a blog about the work when I have finished…it’s an impressive site though.

Secondly I have been working on my own projects….One is the site www.villa-finder.com . This isn’t the permanent location of this site, I bought the url for a future project. The site is going to be a template for future sites that I intend to use to advertise peoples villas online. I have built the site using C# and asp.net using webforms, however, I am about to change the model to use MVC… a little about this soon.

I am also currently reading about SEO – I am currently making notes and will soon upload my notes as soon as I have finished the book.

I also intend on finishing my blogging about DNS…. tall order but a few nights of hard work should sort it out.

Working in the IT industry you would expect everything to be automated to reduce man hours, hell you got the workers there with the skills so there is no need to outsource anything. Yet I am becoming more aware of how many things do need to be automated…. and how much time these things would save. It may only take me 20 minutes to set up a site from beginning to end, but times that by the number of sites we have and by the number of developers….thats a huge amount of time that could be spending on other things. So i’ve set myself a task to spend a little time after work to try and learn about Windows PowerShell. I have been told by a colleague this is the best way to script apps most efficiently. I have also been pointed towards a Gui called PowerGUi. I’ll write a few introductory posts once I have got used to the language.

The internet….the basics!

This is going to be a brief overview of the internet and its components…each of which will be described in detail later…

So what is the internet…. in essence it’s a network, just the largest in the world that has no sole owner where there is never only one way to get from one place to another. The best way to think of this is to imagine a network of roads, so for instance if we take the UK road network. Lets compare travelling from Birmingham to London on the UK road network to trying to contact a computer or server somewhere within the internet.

Any sensible person plans their journey before setting off…you could head down the M40…but what if there was a crash which is blocking the whole road. Easy take the M6/M1. Now if the journey is too long and the road signs don’t always have ‘London this way’ we have to cut the journey into shorter stints…for example A) Find the M40 B) Head past Oxford C) Head to M25 etc….

But how does this relate to the internet i hear you asking yourself???

Well much like the road network there are several routes a message can take to go from one comptuer to another within the internet. This makes the web very robust…if one link fails…then there is always an alternative route. But how does the message know where its going without place names?? Well instead of place names there are IP addresses and web address. Each web address (the name you see in your url e.g. bbc.co.uk) maps to an IP and so essentially they are the same things, the only reason we have web addresses is for our benefit…it actually only slows down the whole process.

So now we have a destination how do we actually go about getting there? Well rather than plan our route we leave that problem to the DNS(Domain Name Servers). Think of these guys as round abouts…arranged in a hierarchal pattern…like a tree patter. So the message heads to the nearest domain server with its destination address. If the DNS doesn’t know where the destination is it then it sends the message to another DNS slightly higher up in the tree. This carries on until one DNS goes I don’t know where it is exactly but go this way to find out. From here the message goes down the path, finding out from each DNS which is the best path to take.

Now this is an over simplified version of what happens but gives the basic idea. I will go into this process into more depth in my next internet basics post.
